Simple Maintenance and Repair Tips for Your Garage Door

Does your garage door match up to the rest of your beautiful home?

While you renovate and look into every area of your house, the garage door is often last on the list. However, this is what you first use when you drive home from work, even before you step into your home. This is also the first thing your guests see when they visit you. You may only notice it when it stops working. When it does, you may realize how important it is to keep it operating smoothly.

Here are a few maintenance tips to protect your garage door as well as your possessions inside.

Oil Hinges

Lightly lubricate the hinge pivots, roller tracks, extension springs, and all moving parts regularly with oil. Excessive oil can make the parts greasy and attract dust. Regular oiling will keep your garage door opening and closing smoothly without creaking.

Check Auto-Reverse

Lift the door, place an object under the door and hit the remote button to test the auto-reverse. It should roll back as soon as it touches or senses the object on the floor.

Clean Daily

Regular cleaning not only makes your garage door look bright and inviting but also protects it from grime and corrosion. Dust it daily, spray a household detergent or all-purpose cleaner and wipe clean with a damp cloth. You can also apply car wax if the door is metal to give it a nice shine. A door vinyl cleaner for the frame also keeps it sparkling. Clear away dust, debris or flood water that gather around the edges and sidetracks following a thunderstorm. Wood doors need to be checked for water damage after heavy rains too.

Fix Loose Springs

It is important to replace broken or loose springs and tighten roller brackets instantly or the door will suddenly give way when you least expect it, leaving your home vulnerable to intruders. Avoid fixing springs yourself. Call a garage door professional to get it repaired and serviced properly. If the springs are in pairs and one is broken, it is better to get both replaced together. If the door needs adjustment, call an expert. Doing it yourself can damage it further. Avoid putting a basketball hoop over your garage door. Balls can dent the door surface or break hinges.

Replace Damaged Garage Door Parts

The roller brackets need to be examined at least twice a year and replaced every few years. Also, replace the rubber weather seal strip at the bottom of your door if it’s worn out to keep debris at bay.

Remember to turn off the power source when you are working on your garage door. Lock the door rollers to keep them in place. Declutter your garage from time to time to keep it neat and tidy. This also allows you to access your home easily, without stepping over a pile of unnecessary objects.
